Lahore Smog and Motorway Fog: Safe Driving Tips for Winter 2026

Lahore's smog is at its worst of the season so far, and motorway fog usually follows. On Monday 2 November, Lahore recorded an overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of 530, with some neighbourhoods far higher, and topped the global pollution rankings [1][2]. Before any long drive this winter, call the motorway police (NHMP) on 130 or check their travel advisory, drive on low beams with a big gap to the car ahead, and plan intercity trips for daylight, because motorway fog is usually thickest from around midnight until just after sunrise [3].

How bad is Lahore's smog right now?

APP reported an overall AQI of 530 in Lahore on 2 November. The worst reading was 902 in Iqbal Town, followed by 698 in Paragon City, 619 in Chaman Park and 569 on Barki Road. Model Town read 471 and DHA Phase 5 read 412 [1]. Any reading above 300 counts as hazardous [4].

The Express Tribune reported that IQAir put Lahore at 535 at 8 am, with fine particles (PM2.5) at 343 micrograms per cubic metre, and that Gujranwala, on the GT Road and M-11 side of Lahore, read 606 the same morning [5]. Samaa listed Faisalabad at 441 and Islamabad at 173, so the air usually gets cleaner as you drive north [2].

The weather is not helping. APP said the city stayed dry with winds of only about 3 km/h, which lets smog sit over the city instead of clearing [1]. Readings also swing within a day. The aqi.in page for the US Embassy station showed a high of 656 at 1:31 am and a low of 197 at 2:01 pm on 2 November [6]. Afternoons are usually the least bad time to be out.

Enforcement is active. Lahore police said in late October that they had arrested 65 people and registered 37 cases for breaking anti-smog rules [7], and the Punjab Safe Cities Authority uses AI cameras to catch smoke-emitting vehicles [4]. If your car smokes, get it checked now.

Smog vs fog: what changes on the road

Smog is a mix of smoke, exhaust and dust. It cuts visibility in the city and makes the air harmful to breathe. Fog is water droplets, and it is the main reason motorways close in Punjab in winter [3]. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) calls it dense fog when visibility falls below 50 metres [8].

Both are worst at night and early in the morning, so the same rule helps with both: travel in daylight when you can.

How to check if the motorway is open

Do not assume the motorway is open because the sky looks clear at home. Only the motorway police can close a road, so they are the people to ask [3].

• Call NHMP helpline 130 before you leave and again on the way if the weather turns.
• Check the NHMP travel advisory board [9]. It lists road closures, lane closures, diversions and weather notes by sector, with kilometre markers and a "last updated" time [3].
• Check the date on the PMD fog forecast [8]. It shows expected fog on each motorway stretch in three-hour blocks, but when Pakera checked on 31 October the tables still carried last winter's February issue date [10]. An old "No Fog" tells you nothing, so rely on NHMP until PMD restarts the tables.
• Watch the sector, not just the motorway. The M-2 is split into M-2 North (Islamabad to Kot Momin) and M-2 South (Kot Momin to Lahore), and conditions can differ [3].

Safe driving tips for smog and fog

1. Use low beams and fog lights. High beams bounce off fog and make it harder to see.
2. Slow down and keep a long gap from the car ahead, especially on the motorway.
3. Keep windows closed and air on recirculate when the AQI is high, and carry an N95 mask for stops. Doctors in Lahore have advised N95 masks for anyone who must go out [7].
4. Don't stop on the hard shoulder in fog. If visibility drops too far, leave at the next exit or service area.
5. Plan around the night. Fog closures can start around midnight and lift by mid-morning, so a 9 am start is often smoother than a 4 am one [3].
6. Keep your car in good shape. Check wipers, lights and tyres before winter. A car that smokes can be stopped under anti-smog rules [7].

Planning a trip to Islamabad, Sialkot or a wedding this winter

November is wedding season, and it is also when smog is usually worst. Late October to mid-November is often the toughest stretch [11]. If the motorway closes, your options are to wait for it to reopen, take the GT Road, or move the trip later in the day.

Fuel is another cost to plan for. Petrol stayed at Rs 377.91 per litre and diesel rose by Rs 2.29 to Rs 402.96 for 31 October to 2 November, and prices are now revised every few days, so check the latest notification before a long trip [12].
